I want to do a project for a linguistics class on the South Jersey dialect, and was wondering if some fellow South Jerseyites would mind answering a couple of questions about how people talk there:

-Are there particular words you use that people from out of state (or even out of town) call you out on as sounding 'weird' or 'funny'?

-Are there specific words or pronunciations you say that you yourself happen to think sound distinctively South Jersey?

-Do you think people from different parts of South jersey speak differently (say, people from Cherry Hill vs. people from Wildwood?)

Thank you very much in advance! Please note that these answers will not be used directly in the research paper, they're just questions my professor wanted me to get a wider audience to answer to we can better plan the research project, since there is really nothing written on our dialect in any of the literature out there!

I heard a rumor that some places will give you a free haircut if you agree to donate at least 10 inches or so to charity, like Locks of Love or Pantene Beautiful Lengths. I'm not sure if that means they would just take scissors to your ponytail for you, or if they would give you an actual decent-looking haircut with the remains of your hair, but either way -- can anyone corroborate this? And if so, are there any places in the area that will do it?

The Committee to Unseat Sean Kean campaign has begun against the New Jersey Republican Senator who voted against marriage equality. The Senator represents heavily gay sections of the state including Asbury Park and the Ocean Grove section of Neptune.

NJ Senate Bill 1967, the Freedom of Religion and Equality in Civil Marriage Act, has been voted out of committee and goes before the full state senate this Thursday!

Three more steps before gay marriage in New Jersey is legalized:

--Senate vote (Thursday)
--Assembly judiciary committee votes whether bill proceeds (~Monday)
--State assembly votes bill into law (~next Thursday)

Chairman of the NAACP Julian Bond, NJ ACLU Executive Director Deborah Jacobs, and about a dozen lawyers and professors of law (unanimously!) spoke in support of the bill last night, as well as clergy from 18 religious groups who want the right to legally solemnize same-sex unions in their traditions.

If you have a few free moments, please consider calling your state senator today. We need to bombard their offices, flood their voicemail, and pour in the letters until their mailboxes burst to let them know we don't believe in making second-class citizens in New Jersey. Not one more woman who needs to explain to a hospital doctor why she has the legal right to see her dying partner of 25 years!

Here's how to find your state senator:

This is the moment of truth in the civil rights battle of our generation. We need your help!

Even though it's in Philly, this event has a TON of South Jersey Filmmakers - check out the writeups in the S. Jersey Courier Post!

Ritz Actors get featured in Project Twenty1 Film Fest
South Jersey Face: Doug Siedel Premieres Film @ Project Twenty1

Here is the general info:

Project Twenty1 Film & Animation Festival (P21Fest)
October 1-4, 2009, All-Day
University City Area, Philadelphia

P21Fest is a celebration of independent film and animation in Philadelphia hosted by Project Twenty1, a volunteer-run arts organization dedicated to inspiring, connecting, exhibiting, and promoting artists from all disciplines. The festival opens with the one-time-only Philadelphia Premiere of "You Might As Well Live" (October 1 @ 7:30 pm) , an off-the-wall comedy where Robert R. Mutt embarks on a madcap adventure to attain the three keys to being a "somebody" - a girl, some money and a championship ring.

Over 50 films will screen over the 4-Day festival, including the 21-Day Filmmaking Competition films, a collection of animated & live action shorts from all over the world based on the common secret element "Key". P21Fest will also host educational workshops, including Pitch Yourself!, a seminar to teach you pitching dos and don't, along with “Speed Networking” (a business card swap similar to the style of speed dating, but more productive)

And if you're into parties, you can't miss “Shorts and Shots” (an open-mic-style casual screening you can BYOShort!) and Friday Night FX (October 2 @ 9:30 pm), a celebration of Special FX Makeup Artists at The Ellen Powell Tiberino Museum.

So I failed my car inspection for what else.. the parking brake, which hasn't worked in YEARS and when my car was inspected 2 years ago they never said anything about it.  Apparently, the guy I had last week was pretty pissed off about having to work the day before a big holiday weekend and was being a stickler about everything.  To get a parking brake fixed, is pretty expensive, and considering I never use it, I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to fix something I don't use.  Also, I'll be buying a new/used car in a few months, but not before my expiration date to fix and re-inspect my car.

I talked to my usual mechanic and he used to have a guy that would do private inspections and not fail you for stupid stuff (e.g. parking brake!) and it was only $100.  Apparently this guy is no longer in business, but I was not aware such places exist... do any of you know a private car inspection that will give me a 2 year sticker at minimal cost?

Thanks!

EDIT:  Sorry, should've specified the area I'm looking for such a place, either Camden or Gloucester County or will consider Burlington or Cumberland as well.
